For the second time in as many weeks, a fatal crash has been reported at the intersection of Buckeystown Pike (Route 85) and Executive Way after 20-year-old Buckeystown resident Sotir Markoff died at an area trauma center, according to the sheriff's office.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, deputies were called to the intersection to investigate a two-vehicle crash that left Markoff dead and a passenger in the other car with critical injuries.

Investigators say that one vehicle was driving north on Route 85 and attempting to make a left onto Executive Way when it was struck by a second coming in the opposite direction as it crossed through the intersection.

Markoff was rushed by paramedics to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore following the crash, where he later died. The other driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the passenger in that vehicle was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

There were no signs of impairment, and speed was not a factor in the latest crash, officials said. It remains under investigation.

The latest incident came less than two weeks after a similar crash in the same intersection on Thursday, Oct. 5, when Frederick resident Darlene Grantham, 76, was struck and killed by a Mack Truck.

“This is now the second crash with a fatality in this vicinity in the last two weeks,” Frederick County Sheriff Cpl. Nathan Rector said. “With new traffic patterns, expansion of the lanes, and increasing traffic volumes on Route 85, we remind drivers to pay attention to all traffic signals, signs, and the rules of the road.”
